Information of Linoleic acid from BacMet

Compound Information

  • Compound name: Linoleic acid

  • Chemical Class: Free Fatty Acids

  • Description: Generic name cis-9,12-Octadecadienoic acid. Alkali metal and ammonium salts of fatty acids are used as adjuvants for acidic biocides and as stand-alone biocides, in particular herbicides. Free fatty acids (FFAs) are known to have bacteriocidal activity and are important components of the innate immune system. The antibacterial properties of FFAs are used by many organisms to defend against parasitic or pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activity of each FFA is influenced by its structure and shape. Linoleic acid is used in making quick-drying oils, which are useful in oil paints and varnishes. These applications exploit the easy reaction of the linoleic acid with oxygen in air, which leads to crosslinking and formation of a stable film. Linoleic acid has become increasingly popular in the beauty products industry because of its beneficial properties on the skin. Research points to linoleic acid's anti-inflammatory, acne reductive, and moisture retentive properties when applied topically on the skin.
